How to watch Major Network TV Online

I’m going to come out of the closet and admit my secret shame — I don’t own a DVR yet. Many people do (elitist bastards who’ll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes) but there’s still quite a few of us out there that have to deal with VCR program settings, trying to avoid leaving the house during prime time, and fighting the desire to procure television by all means necessary. The major networks have provided online players as an alternative for the dvr-less. I’ve been using the major networks ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX for some time now. I recently used a few cable networks as well. Here I’ll list the top network players from best to worse.

Pluses (+)

(+)You can view most of their television shows online.

(+)They utilize lesser commercials breaks than the aired television shows.

(+)You can chose clearly marked episode chapters. Just missed the last few minutes of an episode? You don’t have to sit through the full airing to get to the good stuff.

(+)The full screen is decently sized.

(+) There is continuous episode play.

(+) The streaming player doesn’t require a pop up so that’s always nice when you’re wanting to use less memory.

(+) The website updates episodes the day after it airs on TV.

Minuses(-)

(-) They typically only offer the past 4 shows.

(-) They do not offer their full lineup online rather two minute replays for a few.

Pluses (+)

(+) ABC offers pretty much all its shows online. They even offer every season of Lost just in case you’re wanting to catch up.

(+) In the past they’ve also offer a few online exclusives such as Voicemail.

(+) They stream unaired television shows online as well. Remember when October Road was pretty much cancelled before the writers strike? Well you could’ve viewed the unaired eps here.

(+) They offer an expansive HD showcase which looks quite nice on the larger/high quality monitors.

(+) They have online sections for speciality items such as interviews between intermingled ABC actors and music videos of the most viral ABCesque videos

(+) ABC.com typically offers the full current season for viewing.

Minuses (-)

(-) In order to continue viewing the show after the commercial breaks, you must consistently press ‘continue’

(-) Depending on the show they may insert more commercials than the typically aired amount

(-) It is a pop up the player.

(-) ABC.com experiences more downage than the competitors.

Pluses (+)

(+) Very memorable link. It’s the only I can remember by heart.

(+) Fox online offers most of their shows sans some reality TV offerings

(+) Tech wise I’ve yet to find a computer that will not play their streaming media.

(+) I’ve yet to see a commercial played so its pretty much commercial free. They keep threatening commercials but I’ve yet to see one.

(+) They seem to utilize the surround sound better than any other show as well. Shows come through crystal clear in sound as well.

Minuses (-)

(-) They can take up to 2 days to upload an episode. The others typically have next day availability.

(-) FOX only offers 3 previously aired episodes.

(-) The images get stuck playing ever so often.

Pluses (+)

(+) CBS offers full episodes of past great shows such as Macguyver, Beverly Hills 90210, Twin Peaks & Dynasty

(+) CBS has recently started offering a HD showcase which features clips and a few episodes of its prime-time programming.

(+) They offer full episodes and clips of their daytime programming which is a rarity among online players

Minuses (-)

(-) Incredibly disorganized. It takes a few moments to try to find what you’re looking to see

(-) The commercial breaks are poorly timed

(-) CBS does not offer all or much of their prime-time programming via full episodes rather offering small clips of popular shows like The New Adventures of Old Christine and Criminal Minds

(-) The player often gets stuck and replays a section unless you intervene and try to fast forward to the next section.

(-) No true full screen abilities and the larger the image the poorer the quality.

1) Project Runway–Posh Spice alert! She’ll be guest judging on the season finale. Christian seems to be the favorite to win but I’ll hope that somehow Mr. Crier The Designer makes his way back on and takes home the golden scissors.

Project Runway airs on Bravo at 10/9c

2) Reno 911!–They’re taking our jobs and the Reno sheriff’s department is aiming to stop this. They’ll head to the border to help out with patrolling. This will be a stunning success like all their other ventures.

3) Moment of Truth–Of course everyone is just now catching up to my favorite guilty pleasure. It took a marriage ending tragically in a sick voyeuristic manner for you guys to see what I saw weeks ago–AWESOMENESS! See what you’ve been missing and more tonight!

Three to See–Tuesday March 4, 2008

1) Super Tuesday the Sequel coverage. Its always fun to see the quips of the pundits, the votes tallied, the graphics and the color charts. Oh I can’t wait to see me some color charting. Also we may see someone drop out at the end of night so there is the added lure of viewing a dying dream.

STTS coverage begins at 7pm on CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, etc.

2) New Amsterdam–He’s an immortal cop not like Nick Knight because this guy doesn’t suck blood or like Captain Jack Harkness because no one is like Captain Jack Harkness and not like Angel because Angel was a detective not a cop silly! However he was cursed like Angel so take the time to watch the show and hope that its as good as something Joss Whedon would write.

3) Biggest Loser Couples–Of course you can delete the couples portion from that title since its every big girl and boy for themselves. You also probably won’t get to see more man crying this week. However, you can always count on getting inspired to get off those lbs. You’ll also probably start to hate that douche Dan as much as I do and if you don’t at least promise me you’ll smash his guitar over his head if you ever meet him.

1) Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The season wraps up with John and Derek at odds over whether Cameron can be trusted. Meanwhile, Cromartie continues tracking John, and Ellison learns he has a enemy within the FBI. Although this show has had some missteps it’s definitely worth catching. If you’ve not seen tscc then tune in to see what you’ve been missing

TSCC airs on FOX at 8/7c–120 minutes

2) 20/20 The Royal Family. Access was granted to a film crew for a year. You’ll get to see some behind the crown looks at the royal family. Although don’t expect the queen to admit that she’s a fan of “who let the dogs out” you might catch her playing with her favorite doggies. Its worth a quick glance

3) The Secret life of a Soccer Mom. Each week one stay-at-home mom who gave up her career, will secretly see the life she left behind. In the premiere episode we find a mother who gave up a fashion designer career. She returns to it then later decides whether she wants to continue the life of a stay-at-home mom or return to her job.

The secret life airs at 10/9c on TLC –60 minutes

Family Guy Spinoff?

We’ve all heard it at this point. Seth MacFarlane is working on a Family Guy spinoff for the character of Cleveland. This is a horrible idea. I couldn’t disagree with this choice more. Other than the fact that Cleveland is a great quirky character/straight man there’s the obvious problem of having nowhere to go with the character. He can’t have the same adventures as Peter and the family. The same type of show won’t work twice…I mean thrice.

Its not that I dislike the character of Cleveland. He’s a fun guy. I also know not every spinoff character has shown everything they have to offer on their premiere show but typically thats in the case of a certain arc. This isn’t quite The Lone Gunmen all over again but it certainly isn’t any of the long list of good to great spinoffs either. My nomination for Family Guy spinoff character–Carl. Who? Carl! Okay sure no one quite remembers him but perhaps you remember the voice of him–H. Jon Benjamin. He’s voice acted in ATHF, DR Katz, Freak Show, Lucy–The daughter of the devil, and my personal favorite–Home Movies.

We don’t know much about Carl except that he’s a bit of a movie buff, he dislikes Meg, he and Chris get along awesomely, he is friends with Brian, and he has a particular interest in sexy movies involving sexy women. This show could work because it’ll catch that Clerks:The Animated Series audience, the Adult Swim audience, and of course McFarlane’s loyal following. As it stands a Cleveland spinoff would work solely for a few episodes before those previously mentioned audiences tuned out. So Seth please consider Carl. It’s still a “C” named character and you have far more places to go with this character than Cleveland.

If you don’t think its meant to be then take a look at this wikipedia trivia and try to disagree. Its a spinoff made is heaven so make it happen Seth.

Jon Benjamin (famous for his role of Coach McGuirk on the animated series Home Movies) reprises his role as the voice of Carl, which may explain Coach McGuirk’s cameo in the previous episode, Blue Harvest. In addition, in the scenes in which Carl appears, the background is animated shakily, a la Squigglevision, a type of animation frequent in many Soup2Nuts cartoons that Benjamin has roles in, such as Home Movies and Dr. Katz. Also, Carl’s dialogue is reminiscent of Benjamin’s previous roles in that they are comprised of ‘realistic’ conversations that appear improvisational, about common interests, such as the movies Carl frequently mentions.“

Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles – Pilot

Another segment in the Terminator franchise is here and it’s actually pretty sound. The general consensus is to forget about the 3rd movie which I think is perfect since I’ve seen the 3rd movie, but don’t remember anything about it. Terminator 2 was my favorite movie way back in Junior High, and I believe it stayed in first place until Pulp Fiction came along. It was the first rated R movie I was ever allowed to see, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

That said, I don’t think the terminator story is still relevant in today’s entertainment world. I don’t think I’m alone here when I say I just don’t care as much about SCC as I would have 10 years ago. I really hope I’m wrong and SCC will hold a huge audience, because I’d really like to see how this series plays out.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles takes place after the 2nd movie and begins in 1997 with Sarah and her son John on the run from the machines that keep going back in time to kill them. During the episode they are joined by a female terminator (Firefly’s Summer Glau) who was sent back in time to protect them, and by the end of the episode they jump to 2005 to find and destroy Skynet (again). They definitely have the terminator look and feel right on SCC. Granted it could be a little darker for my taste, but the cool devices (the gun/the time travel device) are perfect for the world. Also the special effects such as the time travel shots (the lightning and time bubble thing) were right on and I didn’t feel they skimped on the budget at all.

I haven’t seen the second episode yet, but i’m actually looking forward to it. SCC isn’t perfect, but it might be the best show on tv atm because of the writers strike. It will give me something to watch between Allison Dubois solvin’ murders with her dreams and American Idol. Terminator fans may have found something that actually lives up to the first two movies. I’ll give The Sarah Conner Chronicles pilot 6.5 out of 10 red cyborg eyes. I know it seems kind of low, but even though the pilot exceeded my expectations, this series still has a lot growing to do.

Quick Hits: Futurama/ Comedy Central

Futurama, the beloved futuristic drama of Simpsons creator Matt Groening, was inexplicably and unfairly canceled from Fox’s schedule but later found a home on the up and coming late night Adult Swim period airing on Cartoon Network. It flourished there for years usually playing either in the 11/10 or 11:30/10:30 slot which was, of course, perfect timing. It was after any prime time television and was a nice night cap to the evening’s television. It always fared well in the prime demographic. Comedy Central however bought it and has now placed it in the worst time slot to ever exist. Smack dab in a prime time slot of 9/8. Of course I am not suggesting they should bump either The Daily Show or the Colbert Report for it but what about 10:30/9:30? After all its a show that has done well in a late night slot and typically Comedy Central uses the 9:30 slot for…crap. I respect that Comedy Central has grown immensely in the past few years, thanks given almost entirely to South Park and Jon Stewart but there is typically crap on the channel. Best shows being The Daily Show, South Park, The Colbert Report, The Sarah Silverman Show, and Reno 911. Yes! In that order. Every thing else is mediocre at best (lets not count reruns of other network shows). Oh and if anyone thinks Carlos Mencia is nothing more than a catchphrase and a poor, poor replacement for Chappelle then you are deluding yourself. With all the crap they air you’d think they’d given a proven ratings grabber a decent time slot. Did they? No. They said let it compete against shows like Heroes, Reaper, Bionic Woman, Supernatural, The Office, Grey’s Anatomy, and House. I know you’re thinking with a show airing daily you’re bound to come up with stiff competition from someone. Oh rly? ya rly? Let’s take a look at that 10:30/9:30 slot. CSI Miami, Boston Legal, Dirty Sexy Money, and ER. That’s the most competition. So I would like to hate on Comedy Central for a minute. I knew the move from AS to them wouldn’t be perfect but I didn’t expect them to chose such a horrible slot. Gosh I’d almost rather they put it on at 8/7 than this. I guess I’ll finally have to get the dvd’s. I hope they’re happy. Paying for tv? Pffft!

One Show, Three Opinions–Prison Break “Photo Finish”/ “Vamonos”

Each week we watch one show and offer up three opinions. Many times we agree and other times we fight to the death to decide whose opinion is right. Unfortunately you won’t get to see the thunderdome but whats left is One Show, Three Opinions. This week is Prison Break “Photo Finish”/ “Vamonos”

Bunnyfear 1/10 for hotties

Same as everyone I watched Prison Break the first season and thought it had something interesting to offer and at the least it gave us Wentworth Miller in a regular TV role. Of course I would’ve been more happy to see him as the devil on Joan of Arcadia ( durn you CBS for cancelling it just because oldies liked it ) but I’d take him anywhere where he can show off his versatile acting skills and smoldering good looks. The thing is that Prison Break is so horrible that not even the hotness of Wentworth makes it tolerable. The reason I hate Prison Break is the same reason I hate Lost. It’s nothing but false drama, pointless buildup, and mysteries that are never answered satisfyingly. I watched these episodes despite knowing nothing about the current season and perhaps that’s why I didn’t find them at all interesting. Micheal was planning a fake fight to break out this Whistler guy. His brother was working to get his kid back. That guy from Invasion got out of prison and then had some sort of druggie break down. This show sucks and I hate you if you watch it. Monday at 8/7 central? There’s way better things out there people and you’re a horrible person if you chose Prison Break over them.

Matthew 3/10 for effort

Prison Break. Ahhh yes, one of these days I will break out, but the
cheesy testosterone driven drama keeps me locked up every Monday
night. I’ve watched this ridiculous mess from the very first episode
and squealed with delight during the first nine episodes or so, but it’s
been downhill from there. Season two was so bad I almost stopped
watching. It was one over the top cliffhanger after another but at the
very end, Michael ended up in Soma, a hardcore prison in Panama. I
believe it was necessary for us to go back to prison if Prison Break was
ever going to work again. Hey it’s working for My Name is Earl, in my
opinion, so why not? It has been a lot more interesting this season,
and as soon as I’m satisfied that this show isn’t going anywhere ever, I
will stop watching and maybe this fish out of water will finally die.
This past week, in the two hour PB special (!), we went through the
motions again as Michael finally finds out that Sarah is dead and blames
Whistler as a diversion to help them prison break, if I can use “prison
break” as a verb. There were some genuinely interesting moments in the
two hours and the cliff hanger left me wanting to see what happens
tonight, but as far as I’m concerned it might as well be a guilty
pleasure like Passions. I’m ashamed to tell you I watch it, I’m ashamed
to write about it and I’m ashamed I didn’t turn it off a year ago or
more. So that being said, I’m going to watch it again, but I’m not
going to like it.

Last week’s prison break was a “we didn’t get to air last weeks episode so, umm, here’s a 2 hour special presentation!” I swear, i believed the “special presentation” line only the first 5 or 6 times I heard it. What can i say about prison break. It’s definitely a love-hate relationship. I think there have been some really bad decisions made as far as plot points, especially in the second season (can’t believe i stuck through that) but this season and particularly these two episodes offer some of the best writing of this series.
I liked that the daytime prison escape was foiled. There’s no way they could have pulled that off and made it seem real and It would have been way too convenient. I hope they include Bellick and the basketball playing kid in the next escape and I bet T-Bag’s definitely going to be a part, either in hindering or helping (probably both) the escape.
I’m curious what will become of Bellick. Surely he isn’t meant to be a weak, blubbering mess left to rot in a Panama prison. I hope he’ll escape with Michael & Whistler and maybe sacrifice his life so the other’s can escape in repentance for his sins. Also, including Lachero in the escape was a very surprising and welcome twist. This was one of the best decision in the history of this show. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

11/30. Ouch! That has got to be lowest rating ever. It’s time for an execution.

Best News Ever: Joss Whedon Back On Television

Give Me My Remote has just announced a new series by Buffy, Angel, & Firefly creator Joss Whedon. The show is called DOLLHOUSE and stars Eliza Dushku (from Buffy and Tru Calling).

Here is the premise posted at Give Me My Remote:

“Echo (Eliza Dushku) [is] a young woman who is literally everybody’s fantasy. She is one of a group of men and women who can be imprinted with personality packages, including memories, skills, language—even muscle memory—for different assignments. The assignments can be romantic, adventurous, outlandish, uplifting, sexual and/or very illegal. When not imprinted with a personality package, Echo and the others are basically mind-wiped, living like children in a futuristic dorm/lab dubbed the Dollhouse, with no memory of their assignments—or of much else. The show revolves around the childlike Echo’s burgeoning self-awareness, and her desire to know who she was before, a desire that begins to seep into her various imprinted personalities and puts her in danger both in the field and in the closely monitored confines of the Dollhouse.”

We’re absolutely ecstatic that Joss will have a new show on TV, and this premise sounds amazing. I haven’t been whole since Buffy, Angel, or Firefly left the airwaves. Let’s hope this will fill that void. You can find a link to the original story with more info on DOLLHOUSE here.
