You ever heard of the show Charlie Jade? You probably haven’t, and that’s a damn shame because it’s actually a pretty damn cool show . Set in the near future(‘one half hour from now to be in fact), Charlie Jade deftly mixes film noir with a dystopian future storyline. Okay, so that sounds just like Blade Runner, but the show throws a wrench into the whole thing by introducing a multiverse. The storyline revolves around the Vexcor company’s attempt to drain water from the other universes for their own gain. Like most detective stories, the show begins with Charlie Jade investigating a completely different case before suddenly being thrown into not only a big conspiracy, but an entire different universe that he is not familiar with.

The show has an impressive set of special effects. At first glance it looks like they took all their cues from Blade Runner, but as you get deeper into the show, you begin to see that it has it’s own take. For example, water is a constant theme in the show, and the colors are nicely saturated to play up the noir image. It reminds me a bit of the little I seen of Doctor Who actually.

So okay, so obviously I like the show. Why am I cursing the Sci-Fi Channel? Now, as a geek I’m a fan of the Sci Fi channel. I don’t always see their programming, but for the most part I have no beef with it. Hell, they even show Firefly every now and then. But what they done with Charlie Jade brings back memories of the worst of FOX programming. They started off by putting it on Friday nights, and when that didn’t get the ratings they wanted, they decided to change it’s schedule. It’s now playing on Mondays at 2AM Central time. I’m not making this up. Sci Fi apparently decided this was the schedule that would get Charlie Jade its viewers. They even advertise it on their website. Note the exclamation point after “New time”, as if that’s something to be excited about. Really Sci Fi? Really? I mean, come on, I’m sure you can go without one of your made for television movies staring a reality star/wrestling/musician for one time a week and put this show on instead. Or hey, how about just getting rid of ECW? It’s not like anyone’s watching that anyways.

Normally I’m not one to encourage watching television shows through *cough* other means *cough* but with this show, I’m willing to make an exception I think.
