One Show, Three Opinions–LOST “The Beginning of the End”

Each week we’ll watch one show and offer up three opinions. As always sometimes we’ll agree and sometimes we’ll violently disagree enough to put out a mob hit on each other. Fortunately we’ll come to our senses and cancel the hit. You won’t get to see any of that Sopranos action but whats left is One Show, Three Opinions. This week is Lost “The Beginning of the End”  The cast of Lost ...which of the six make it off?

Matthew [6/10]

The long awaited season four opener of “Lost” was a bit lost on me I think. I love this show, though I got into the game a little late around the last two episodes of season 1. Since then it’s been a thrill ride with this enormous and talented cast, not counting the dribble of the first half of season three. I was excited about the “two hour season premiere” until I found out the first hour was just another recap and the meat, the “good hour”, could have been outtakes from last years season finale for all that didn’t really happen. It was great to see Charlie again in some form during the “been rescued” part of the show, but I wanted something else on that besides Hurley being one of the six rescued. It just seemed like what you knew was going to happen happened and everyone just went through the motions. I am curious to see what happens to everyone else if only six survivors made it back and where they carry the show when they finally catch up to them going home, and after this bit of exposition I believe that things will be smooth sailing from here. I give the fourth season opener a slap on the wrist and a fitting 6 rescued survivors out of 10.

Lost is both frustrating and awesome. I love the characters, but I almost can’t believe mainstream America would watch something so weird. Maybe it’s not as weird as I think it is, but one thing I do know is that whatever is going on with that island and the survivors of Oceanic flight can’t possibly live up to the hype and suspense that surrounds it.
After shoving Lost in our faces this week (last year’s season finale with pop up video on Wednesday, and the one hour recap on Thursday), we finally got to watch the Season premiere. It wasn’t bad. It was hard to watch rescued Hurley be so depressed and sour, but then it was refreshing to see him happy and carefree cannonballing into the ocean.
I’m really interested in this Jacob character now . When we first met him, I just thought, here’s another weird island thing we won’t have answers to for a few years. He seemed to want Hurley to come in for a cup o’ tea, or to eat him; I’m not sure which. The fact the cabin can come and go as it pleases was somehow good enough for me to get on board with the Jacob storyline. Lost frustrates me to no end, and If the characters weren’t so darn good I definitely would have given up on it a long time ago. There are still more questions to be answered, but i’m content for now. Bring on some more Lost.

Let me start by saying that I have a decidedly odd relationship with Lost. Okay wait no thats not the best way to start. Let me restart by saying that I loved Veronica Mars. It was a great TV show that somehow was placed in the horrible timeslot opposite Lost. The Lost juggernaut had already snared most of the world at the point that happened. Of course I knew that Veronica Mars competing with Lost was just like David and Goliath except that David was going to get beaten severely then mocked with the Nelson Muntz laugh. Now add this to other things like the fact that its a show that fairly consistently doesn’t have any follow through. The show stumbles over itself while trying to force the audience to invest in new random characters. The show has a huge ego while trying to force us to go deeper into a mystery that seemingly will never have a satisfying payoff and lastly the show relies on quick, easy, sweeps drama. “Ooo how about we tell people this week we might kill someone?” rinse and repeat. Basically I hate Lost for a few reasons. All that being said I still watch Lost though I did quit mid third season. I caught those missed episodes on abc.com before the premiere. It’d be naive to think that didn’t hype me into really liking the first episode of this season but I do agree that Lost has rebounded admirably. Once again I come back to Lost. I’ve only tried to quit it about 42 different times. This episode looked to the future and encouraged a whole new set of questions. The main question being OMG Srsly! Why don’t they just kill Ben? That and other questions will be answered in about….oh probably never but once again I want to look into the eye of the island and see a good show.

Lost gets 8.5/10

Lost gets a respectable 22/30. We can only imagine the score they would’ve gotten if Hurley hadn’t been on screen for most of it.

Lost airs Thursdays on ABC at 9/8c
